949 TORO CANYON
As the Project Architect for 949 Toro Canyon, I was responsible for the execution of the design of a seminal project for Barton Myers Associates, a personal residence for Barton Myers in Montecito that challenged the notion of building safely in a wildfire zone. Building on the tradition of all steel houses from Barton Myers, we took it to the next level, having water and swimming pools on the roofs of the structures, all steel construction, roll up glass doors that open to the environment, but with steel fire shutters that can close down the structure. Showing that it is possible to create a classic So Cal Case Study in indoor/outdoor living but still being safe from wildfires elevated the project to winner of multiple awards from the AIA and others, and featured in many publications including American Masterworks: Houses of the 20th and 21st Century proclaiming it one of the 40 most important works of residential architecture in the last 120 years.
